You're watching the last stand with Brian Custer.
SPEAKER_03That's right. It is the last stand. I'm Brian Custer. We bring you the biggest names in the sport. And joining me now is one of the biggest. When you talk about 135, 140. I mean, the man can go up, down, whatever he chooses to do. He is the former WBA super featherweight champion of the world. You know him as the Reaper, Lamont Roach Jr., back with us on the last day. What's up, champ?
SPEAKER_00What's up, man?
SPEAKER_03What's up, Ryan, man? It's good to have you, man. And it's good to hear that you're back August 1st. Uh, William Zapeta, guy who gave Shakur all he wanted in a fight. Uh, tell tell us why uh Zapeta, why not Pitbull? Why tell us why Zapeta?
SPEAKER_00Well uh we can clarify a lot of things first. Uh uh obviously Zipeta was the number one contender in the WBC. And um, and you know, in the newer newer rankings, um, according to a couple months ago, I was ranked number two. So uh, you know, they did one and two for the bacon title. But to clear up the whole pitbull thing, pitbull didn't want the rematch. I obviously after we fought, he said, yeah, I'm I'm not gonna do I'm not gonna do what somebody else did. We're gonna run them, we're gonna run it back.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, they ain't want that smoke. They know they they knew what was gonna happen. Like, they knew what was gonna happen. Obviously, like an adjustment that had to be made. Like, clearly, I could have probably outboxed them all twice. So, you know, it was just gonna be a clean shoot, and I just think they wasn't ready for that. They started asking for way too much money and whatever the case may be. They just basically outpriced themselves and just basically was like, Oh, we're holding off to fight Dalton Smith and all this other stuff.
SPEAKER_03So what what do you think about real quick? What do you think about him and Gary Antoine Russell?
SPEAKER_00I think it's a good fight. I think it's a real good fight. Um, people shouldn't be able to beat uh Gary Antoine Russell, but we'll see how he handles the pressure. Rather than I don't think he should eat him.
SPEAKER_03So and and so tell me about Zapeta.
SPEAKER_00Zapeta, uh he you know, he is what you see, firefighter, um, relentless pressure, a lot of punches. Probably not that damaging uh far as uh power or whatever the case may be, but very active and um very consistent. So, you know, you know, you you know we got a thousand and one tricks up our sleeve, and for real, for real, if he wanna meet fire with fire, he's gonna meet fire with fire.
SPEAKER_03Now, you know, I gotta ask you two straight fights, two draws. How do you make sure this one has a different outcome?
SPEAKER_00Man, it's uh in the lab, and which we've been which we've been doing, just just being consistent on uh capitalizing and being dominant throughout the entire rounds. Uh I feel as though I didn't lose uh or I I feel as though I edged out both fights uh the first one by a lot, but the second one definitely close. Um I broke my hand in the fifth or sixth round. And um, you know, I fought six rounds with a broken hand. So uh given as though I had that little issue, I still think I swept the last half of the fight um with pure boxing skill and um you know my tactics. Either way, we just gotta step it up. It's it's you know what I'm saying? Like we gotta start punishing these guys even more and uh you know stepping on the gas in certain instances to you know seal the deal or even you know get them out of there.
SPEAKER_03Um uh when you talk about this fight, when you I I guess when you look at let's say the last two fights, did you ever say to yourself, like, man, is something that is somebody against me? Is there something going on? Uh I you got because you obviously, like you said, you felt like you won both fights. I know there's a number of people who would say roach won both of those fights. Have you if have you put your finger on why these these draws come about?
SPEAKER_00I mean, of course, that ran across my mind, like, you know, like, damn, do they got something against me? Or you know what I'm saying? Like, what I do, right? So, you know, um, and understanding some of the politics of boxing too, it's like uh it's bittersweet because you know how messed up the game has been for a long time. Sad to say, you seen cause worse, like you've seen cause worse. So all in all, I just I just choke it up as if like thinks it's like they might have something out for me, but they can't just blatantly just like ah you lost. Yeah, like you know, yeah. Maybe they're not ready for the changing of the guard yet. I don't know. I don't know. I think I'm the perfect fit, but hey, I I think I I think I make the sport very exciting. So, you know, I think I I think I fit that picture very well. I just gotta go out there and just you know, complete the mission. I'm I'm not off my path. I'm still giving the fans uh what they want, great fights. Um, this is my fourth championship fight and you know consecutively. Um and you know, I'm I'm here for a reason. I'm one of the best in the world, man. I can't, you know what I'm saying? Like I time in and time out, I I show it.
SPEAKER_03Do you do you think that um to that point, like maybe I gotta start taking some of these cats out? And yeah, I could put on a boxing uh virtuoso or performance, but maybe I need to when I get a guy hurt, it may be time for me to just start you know cleaning these cats out.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And um, but you gotta take into account. I mean, I fought Pebble Cruz, he must stop.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00I fought Jeron St. Davis, he must stop. Yeah, that alone took a loss. So, you know, it's easier said than done because the motherfuckers on the side of the ring, excuse me, them other guys on the on the other side of the ring, they trying to do the same thing I'm trying to do.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00So they ain't just gonna lay down, and you know, it's it's gonna be my job to make them lay down, but you know, and that's and that's more so we'll what we'll probably focus on, um, and being just being more dominant, but Zapeta never been stopped. But I think I can do it.
SPEAKER_03I think I can do it along those lines, we had Oshaki Foster on the last stand. I I know you've seen it, but I just want to quote him. He said, I'm pulling for Roach to beat Zapeta because if I don't get Shakur or I don't get Navarete, I'm moving up to 135, and I'm gonna become his mandatory, so he's gonna have to fight me. I tried to get him in the past, little buddy didn't want to fight me.
SPEAKER_00Okay, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up. The first half is cool. That's BS. That ever, the other half is BS. I can I can outline that timeline for you too. I think people people nowadays, especially him, is using the word duck very loosely. Um the people in boxing know how boxing works. So let's say Oshaki was already champion before I won my championship. Before I fought, we both had words, not nothing malicious or nothing like that. It's like, do your thing, hopefully we can unify. I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna do my thing, we can unify next. I won my title in November of 2023. He had a fight in February of 2024, so you know that he knew about the fight in December. Why would you take a fight if we agreed to unify with each other? That don't that don't make sense. But if I said if I if I was to say he was ducking me, am I wrong? According to his logic, right? Why would you line up a fight? You could have fought me. You could have you could have waited. So he had to find line up. I'm not waiting for him. I'm not gonna wait for him. So after I fought, I fought my mandatory at home. I defended my title at home in front of a great crowd. I bought championship boxing back to Washington, D.C. I bought Pro Box to Washington, DC out that their first time going outside of uh their home base in a nice event. Yeah, I did that for because they because I top ring did contact us for a little bit more money than what they was offering us. You mean to tell me they offered me uh as much money as they did for a defense for a title unification? Come on now. We send that off a back and said, please be real with yourself, right? And have some more faith in your fighter because basically they wasn't trying to pay that much. This and Nazi loss. They had it, and and we can outline it too. Top rank had it set up for me to fight deal for me to fight Oshaki win and fight Navarate for three belt unification. I don't want to hurt no feelings or nothing like that, but hey, they should have stood, they should have stood tall on that paper. That's what they should have done. They I'm lobbying for more money for me, but uh in the hindsight, more money for you. Come on, brother. So that was that. Then he defends against Kensey saw and lose. He lost, he lost his belt, but I'm ducking him. But I'm ducking him, right? In a collision course with me, you ended up losing, but I'm ducking you, right? How do that's how does that sound, brother? Go get your go get your hard way back. And which he did, he got his hard way back.
SPEAKER_03And then it's just and to be fair, that that that loss really wasn't a loss.
SPEAKER_00Technically, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, you if you want to keep a spade a spade, if you want to keep a spade a spade, yeah, that fight was a little rough. But the second fight, me honestly, I thought he did worse. So I but I I think there was favor in what they did to him the first time. Because I I mean, like looking, I was there in person. So I I mean, I thought Oshagi pulled it off, but it's like you left it that close for them to do that to you. That's what I you should have washed, he should have washed them, and the second fight was worse.
SPEAKER_01Second fight was worse.
SPEAKER_03So, do you think that we will see a Lamont Roach or Shocky Foster fight in the future?
SPEAKER_00I hope so. I won't put out I really want I really want to get in the ring with him. I hope so. And it's as just like he said, it is as easy as one, two, three. All he had to do is call the WBC. Hey, I wanna I wanna move up. Boom. So if look, listen, people, if I already don't got a fight lined up, obviously I would take that. Obviously, just like he said, if he don't get the shakur fight or the Navarate, that's how boxing works. So don't I don't want to hear none of that. Say if I get your core, say if I get your core, then I I guess I'm ducking them too, right? Yeah, cut it out. That's all I'm saying, man. Look, he just he better be ready. I'm gonna do what I have to do, I'm gonna put my hard work, blood, sweat, and tears in this into this fight because I'm not looking, I'm not overlooking Zapata. But if that opportunity does present itself, then we'd love to take that. Um, because a lot of people are on Ossan Foster right now.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they they hey talk about pound for pound, and he I'm I'm quote his words, not mine. Oh on Twitter. I got little buddy shaking in his boots. Who you he was talking about, you Lamont Rose. Cut it out.
SPEAKER_00Cut it out. Cut it out. I want uh one, I don't fear no man. Two, I definitely wouldn't fear anything in a boxing ring. Like this what I do. This like this this really what I he know. He seen he he's seen the time in the timeout. That's what I do. So, you know, it's it's when the rubber is gonna meet the road one day. That's all I'm gonna say. The rubber gonna meet the road, and I'm it's gonna be ugly.
SPEAKER_03Um, what about Shakur Stevenson? Uh he he he tweeted, uh, he's cool with you. We're gonna whoop your ass when we fight, and we're gonna rock out soon, champ, because uh time is cutting short.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like that. I like that because you know what I'm trying to do to him too. I'll like, you know, aside from us being cool outside the ring, I'm trying to beat his ass. Nobody in the ring, nobody that I will be in the ring with will ever, like, once we enter that zone, it's it's nothing you can do to get away from this. And I mean, I'm on your ass. Like, for sure. It's it's nothing you can do to get away from this. But that's uh that's what I like. I mean, like, it's it's the competition, it's the fire. Like, he wanna be the best. He's one of the best boxers in the in the world. I'm one of the best boxers in the world. Let's let's put that on the line. Let's see who's the best. That's that's what it is.
SPEAKER_03I like it. Um what did you think quickly? Stevenson and Haney trying to work something out. What do you what do you think about that?
SPEAKER_00Uh I don't uh it's a lot of I mean it's business, but it's a lot it's too much going on outside of the business, like too much talking on the media and stuff like that. Like if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. If it ain't, it ain't like that's how boxing works. Um, some fights don't get made because of two small things. Uh and one most important is money. Um, you know, and then the other stipulations they got, whatever, whatever happens, happens. I think it's a good fight for boxing. If it don't happen, I think uh Devin and Shakur both have routes to have good other good fights for boxing. So, you know, um, but that's a good fight to see. That's a good that's that's a good fight to happen for the sport of boxing.
SPEAKER_03Uh how about another guy? And we we spoke with him just recently here on the last day, and was uh Gary Antoine Russell. And uh I know I know you had talked about him in the past, and I asked him, I said, look, you know, I rarely do I hear anybody call out Gary Antoine Russell. And I said, but there is one guy who did do that, and it's the Reaper.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03And he said, look, this guy couldn't even beat Pitbull, had a draw, and he I even think he said he was there. I even thought Pitbull won the fight.
SPEAKER_00So I bet he did. I bet he did. Did you see his fight with Haroka?
SPEAKER_02Yes, that was a pro that was uh that was a rough and tumble fight.
SPEAKER_00Rough and tumble fight. Yes, from a guy who just landed 23 hours prior to the fight. But hey, oh look, man, look. Did you see his fight with Pueblo?
SPEAKER_02Pueblo, yes.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that's what I'm saying. I mean, like, they're talking about I didn't I didn't beat someone. I lost one time, he lost one time. We don't got a lot of room to talk. Only thing we got room to do is rumble. That's that's all I'm saying. And mind you, I specifically called him out. You can ask Louis De Cuba, you can ask ow, you can ask everybody at PBC. We told them to make the fight happen. They offer me his little, I mean his big brother. They offer me, they offer me him in boxing in boxing terms, the senior citizen. The the the inactive guy, TBA, that's his name, TBA, to be announced. They offered me him. No, we want the one that's that's that. That's who we want. We ain't getting no response. We get no response. Oh no, I think we actually gotta know. No, I think no, no, no, we ain't getting no response. He had Heroka lined up. Okay, okay, okay. Okay. Look, that's what I I'm I'm I'm on that. I don't know about these other guys. I'm on that. I'm trying, I'm trying to work. I ain't trying to, you know what I'm saying? Like, I I know I can beat these guys though. That's my thing. I'm not just talking and don't want to get in the ring with people. I'm really trying to, I'm really trying to go there. I'm trying to take it there.
SPEAKER_01So what do you think about that fight? Who who will win that fight, you think, Russell and Pitbull?
SPEAKER_00I think it'll be a it'll be a fan-friendly fight for sure. Um Gary Russell has speed. Uh he has a little to me, he has a little pop from what I from what I can see uh from his record. Um you know pitbull is just I've been in it with pit bull though. I know pitbull can punch. I know pitbull is dual die. And I know he's gonna do whatever he can screw me to try to put a hurting on somebody. So, you know, uh, I don't think I don't necessarily think Antoine uh fought somebody like that style of fighter yet as a professional. I seen him, I seen him fight somebody, I seen him fight somebody like that in the amateurs and it's a long time ago. But that guy beat him like a ragdoll. And guess who beat him in the championship?
SPEAKER_01Who's that? Me. Oh, wow. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Who who is the guy who who beat him? Janeiro Gomez. Good boy signed him straight out the amateurs, just like they signed me. I think he was uh when I beat him, I was on I was on the USA team and I represented the US uh the USA team, um, the men's team in uh in Ukraine, Kiev Ukraine at the Kushko's Brothers tournament, and I won a bronze medal, uh international bronze medal. So yeah, um, yeah, and I and I was there. And nobody nobody can say I'm lying. Nobody can say online. And I we probably got it on tape because we knew that we were gonna fight one of them. They was on the other side of the bracket. So if he would have won, he would have met me in the championship and I would have beat him like I beat the other guy.
SPEAKER_03I like it. Uh uh, and uh one of the things he said is he's all about becoming the undisputed champion at 140. So I assume that this fight would have to be you going up to 140.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Um, and I think you know what? That was his excuse. He was trying to say that I ain't had no belt.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so he did say he uh because I asked him about the what let's get this fight on here. Yeah, well, he needs some credentials.
SPEAKER_00See, see, see uh I mean, people they're gonna catch on, they're gonna catch on. Now I need a belt. All right, don't worry, it's gonna come. Okay, it's gonna come.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of that, uh they they're trying to work it out. We'll see if it does happen. Uh Ken Austin, Javante Davis. If that fight gets worked out, what do you think?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. That might be a long shot. I don't know. I don't you never know who dealing with the other half of that party. Uh, but if it happens, uh I'll tell you what, people better stop, or people better not underestimate or think he don't got it no more. Uh Carla Spade Spade tank is the bad motherfucker in the ring. It's it's no if, ands or buts about it. So people better not go in there thinking what I did is gonna be or like the normal, what they like. I'm really one of them ones, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, eh. So uh, but kid Austin's young, strong. Hopefully he's ready, but that's a lot to deal with. That's a whole lot to deal with. So uh, you know, and and Kid Austin doesn't have a lot of experience as a professional like that. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like the fight a guy who's been headline after headline after headline after headline, championship fights, knocking guys out, going up away, coming back, you know what I'm saying? Like, so we'll see. It's he better be working his ass off if it really happens. But um, you know, I don't, I don't, I don't see that ending too well for him, but it's boxing, man. Anything happened. Hey, like I say, young and strong.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I I I get I get the sense, Lamont, that there's a a faction of people because it was draw, it was draw. But when you talk to like boxing people, and they'd be like, yo, man, I I knew Lamont when he was in DC, I'm telling you, blah blah blah blah. Do you feel um uh what's the word? Uh is it is it unappreciated? Is it do you feel that you you still haven't gotten your due yet?
SPEAKER_00Because of those results, I am overlooked. I think so, for sure. Imagine if I would have imagine if I would have won on a scorecard, uh, on the scorecards against Saint. That's life-changing opportunities. Uh that puts me in the that puts me as a champion, two division world champion. And um two-time world champion, two division world champion. That gives me the leverage to, hey, I just beat the number one fighter at the critically acclaimed too. At the weight class, and I'm in new weight class at that.
SPEAKER_03Face of boxing.
SPEAKER_00That lines up face of boxing. That lines up, if not a star like a spectacular rematch, but if that don't work out like it didn't, Shakur at the time was 135 champion. Uh who was the IBF? I think Lomachenko was uh IBF champion before he retired. Yep, he was. You just had opportunity, and then if I'm not mistaken, Keyshamp was the 35-pound champ. You might be right at the time, maybe, maybe not. Or Baranchek, whatever his name was. One of those guys was the champ. So you know what I'm saying? Like that that's star stuttered, like, you know what I'm saying? That's bigger paydays, star stuttered fights that people want to see. Imagine if I went on a school card with Pay Bull. Yeah, not only am I that's a new division as well, I'm the interim 140 WBC champion. Last me up for a Dalton Smith or the winner of Dalton Smith and Puello. Last me up for a Gary Antoine Russell since he said I don't got no belt. You know what I'm saying? Like, that's what uh Richardson Hitchens, who expressed that he said he wanted to fight, you know what I'm saying? Like, that's what people want to see. Yeah, I'm not tiptoeing around the I'm wondering, I'm going straight at the dudes that that have the spotlight. I'm going straight at the dudes who they think the best, or whatever the case may be. I'm trying to, I'm trying to show that I'm the best.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm also trying to feed my son, too.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00Like, I'm trying to show that I'm the best.
SPEAKER_03What's your ultimate goal?
SPEAKER_00My ultimate goal, I have a few goals in boxing, but my ultimate goal is for the for the people to look back and if it ain't in a if I don't make the hall of fame, at least in their brain, they know that Lamar Jr. was a bad motherfucker. He fought this guy, he fought this guy, he fought this guy, he beat this guy, he beat this guy. He's a multi-division world champ. He was uh multi-time world champ. He was that's what that's what I'm chasing. I'm chasing to be one of the best uh lace up a pig gloves. I can't do it without getting in the ring with all these other guys, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And what are some of those you said that's the ultimate, and some of the other boxing goals are too like the immediate here going forward?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the immediate, the immediate ones, like uh being a two-time world champ, which I should have been fulfilled already, a two-division world champ, which I should have oh god, I should have done already. But you know, uh if I get those two, if if those two draws were wins, I'll be three time three division world champ. You know how much pound for pound conversation, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, hello? You definitely Hall of Famer. Hello, definitely Hall of Famer. In consecutive fights at that, yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00So you know it is what it is though.
SPEAKER_03What about Keyshawn Davis?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know he can't he's a fat boy, but I would if he can make 140, I dust his ass off. And you know why? Because he liked to fight. So I'm gonna clip him. He can fight though. I ain't gonna lie, he can fight. But um, yeah, he he liked to fight too much. So that thing, y'all gonna see a couple of those. But if he can make 140, yeah, he's a big doesn't he might not be the biggest 147, but he damn sure the biggest 140 out there. For sure. I just seen him when I was at the at the fight. He big, but um that's another he one thing about him though, he really trying to rumble too. He he not he ain't BSing the people. Like, he does a lot of call outs and whatnot, but he ain't BSing the people. He really wanna fight. Like, because we we really talked about it. We really talked about fighting. I has the pay to line up. We was on the phone, we was on the phone, and he was just like, he was like, What's up? You trying to run it? I'm like, Yeah, like, but I'm gonna let you know I do have something in the works. If it don't go through, I promise you we can fight. Like, it's it's it ain't it ain't nothing. Like, we can we we can line it up. So um, you know, and it actually went through the WBC mandated the fight between me and uh Zapeta, and he knew that way before all the videos and all that he trolling, but it's cool though, like you know what I'm saying? Like, it's all right, like one day the rubber is gonna meet the road. One day.
SPEAKER_03Uh uh there was something, I think it was Bill Haney who just said if uh Shakur don't want this, then Keyshawn, you up next for Debo. If you if Haney and and uh Keyshawn rumbled, what would you think about that fight?
SPEAKER_00That's a good fight for boxing. It's a great fight for boxing. Um Devin being a champion that he is, and Keyshawn being a former champion that he is, moving up to a weight where he probably won't have to struggle to make weight. It'll be a good it'll be a good fight. It'll be a real good fight.
SPEAKER_03What do you want the people to know about you and Zapeta coming up and what's gonna happen?
SPEAKER_00Uh the people should know that obviously they're gonna get their money's worth, so they should come to the fight. Um they should definitely come to the fight. It's gonna be a sight to see. I want I'm one of them guys that's gonna give everybody one of them on the edge. But I want it to be more so on the edge because I'm about to knock him out. This that's what I really want them to know. Like I really want to put a beating on him. Um but he's a he's a tough customer. He's a tough customer for sure. And um either way, I'm gonna get my hand raised. Either way, whether it's life or death, whether it's a boxing lesson, or whether I knock him out in the first round, I'm gonna get my hand raised.
SPEAKER_03And and the hand is okay.
SPEAKER_00The hand is perfect, might be stronger. I ain't gonna lie. Might be stronger.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay. Yeah. By the end of the year, we'll be saying Lamont Roach is what?
